Sunday Soul – ALIVE
This mix is available in 320 kbps format in exchange for a $10 donation at Treehouse Muzique
Year 11 – Playlist 20/52 – For the week of August 31st 2014
It’s officially been twenty weeks since I resumed Sunday Soul in this form. Initially I had little plans and designs to build an app, and make the site “responsive” and get all fancy on you. But after a few weeks, and no cavalry in sight I decided that Sunday Soul is a labor of my love. I have no way of knowing how many people listen, if anyone reads, and ultimately the gauge of the success of this project I’ve undertaken here is wherever my head is at. So when I’m feeling good, and grateful then I believe that all ten thousand of you rush over here first thing every sunday morning and read your heads off, and devour every inch of my artwork, and then dance around in your underpants cheering to the breathtaking selections I’ve made for you this week. You’re right there with me, and it’s almost better than real life because it never gets weird – we just dance and let go and no one’s watching, or better, we are with the people we love and the music is so overwhelming that we give ourselves to it, and our hearts break open, and we make out, we make love, we make up, we flow out into the world and radiate this love everywhere we go. And when we forget, because we’re human and we forget, we come right back and listen again. So let’s just stay there. I don’t feel like going into the other state of mind I can get into right now. I’m not afraid to state the worst, or even admit that I’ve got a dark side – I’m no counterfeiter – but that felt so good to say that I want to savor it in my mouth a little while longer.
The mission statement here at Sunday Soul has been intimacy. More intimate than ever before, and to reach you with it. This intention is easy transmitting from my studio, or the rooftop of some cool hotel in Tokyo, but it’s never been easy in person. When I perform the pressure to reach you quickly has always found me throwing my voice too hard, or closing up like a little sea anemone because I feel like the audience is too drunk, or too selfish, or too something to hear me and they’d rather have a smack in the face (and a few more beers) and while of course that’s not true, but I’m telling you that in my efforts to equalize and unite myself as a solo performer with a voice apart from Dubtribe and as a musician with so many things to express I decided to reach into the part of myself which I most wanted to hide. Authentic intimacy, spiritual truth and vulnerability in person. Dance music as a revolutionary vehicle. Heavy, right? Seriously.
The last ten weeks have been superb – some of the best of my career. Week 11 was a bon voyage as Martha and I split SF and hauled off to Europe and spent weeks 12 – 16 transmitting a travelogue from 12 countries and 17 – 19 have been attempting to re enter the atmosphere of “home.” Working out how we talk to each other, how we remember our dead, and who we are and what we think we’re doing here. These issues are all still here, so feel free to peruse the sneaky archive menu to the left of this page and listen and listen, and read and revel in it with me.
This week is all about saying thank you. This week is a mix. I woke up Saturday morning with the poster designed, and got to work. I set up the studio for mixing, and curated the music from the last 10 shows and selected the tunes I most wanted to hear and then I invited Martha into the studio and began recording this set. It all went down in one take. I would have loved to have kept mixing all day, all night, and never stopped, but I had places to be across the bay and so about 10 minutes before I left I clicked stop and changed out of my silver lamé jumpsuit, combed my hair and took off. In my way, I think I fell completely back in love with mixing again making the recording. It could be partly the relief of having a different set out on my turntables – Europe was a long trip and I culled and honed a single 5 hour set the entire trip and so yes it was certainly sweet to hear some old friends, and to work with some new ones too – but mostly I think I just love playing music for you. So I played and played and then when I was done I pressed stop.
The ALIVE theme is simply my amusing reiteration of the fact that every ten sunday soul’s I will mix a live one for you, and this is the second such mix. Three more to go before this Sunday Soul calendar year comes to a close. We got a long way to go before then, so don’t worry. Just gather yourselves together, and let’s get down.
Oh, and one more thing: Just because I love deepness, disco, and techno so powerfully chuggy and internal doesn’t mean that there aren’t a hundred other ways to be intimate and vulnerable. There are. But this is my gift to you, and so I am reaching for my people here and now. Not the people who remember the past through some filter, or people who aren’t reading, or listening or feeling anything outside their scope, but you. You who have read this far, and are still listening after all these years. Thank you.
This archive is available in glorious 320 kbps quality MP3 format for your relief and joy and a donation of $10 (that’s like 7 Euros and only 4 Pounds 85p.) Grab it as an instant download from Treehouse Muzique at this link right here
