Sunday Soul – The Very Best of the First Nine
Year 11 – Playlist 10/52 – For the week of June 22nd 2014
Ok. So it’s been ten weeks since I decided that it was time to start up with Sunday Soul again. To celebrate the number ten I thought it would be fun to select my favorite surprises from the previous nine weeks and mix them together for you in a thread which I felt you might enjoy with me.
Mixing these little diamonds which piqued my interest from the last nine weeks wasn’t as easy as I’d expected, and I was tempted to abandon the idea and just add the playlist as usual – it’s easy, the songs are already on the server and all I had to do was just arrange them in the order and click “create playlist” and it’s done. Sitting with Martha and listening to the recording was really different than actually mixing it live. I can tell I was excited, and I rushed through it inadvertantly crushing about three hours worth of music into an hour and half. Martha was lit up like a sweet little candle while I did it and she stubbornly insists that she loves the mix. While I’m given the opportunity to listen to the atonal nature of various mixes and the hasty exit out of Todd’s brilliant re edit of Bryan and wonder if I shouldn’t do it again. But then again, you know how to get a DJ to stop making noise? You turn the tape recorder on… right?
I’ve got mixed emotions about all this you know. I love doing this, and I miss transmitting the program live. But I have to say that I absolutely love having the 4 days a week back, and frankly bookings are on the up, and I’m off to Europe, and I feel really good, deeply happy, and things are going great. My thinking for abandoning the weekly, then monthly program appears to be sound. Just coming back to this, even as a playlisted weekly release, I feel divided. I search for you, and I want to connect, and I am lost. I have my head against my mixer, my headhones dangling around my neck, and all I hear is 60 cycle hum, the sound of my own heartbeat, and I wonder why I ever did this at all.
I’m disappointed in the internet. In many ways I was a happier person when I had to get into a van and drive to New York City (highway 80 from the bay bridge to the George Washington bridge all the way) in order to experience my people there. My memories are better saved in some locked and private place inside my mind than liked, and shared on social media sites. I’m sort of aching for magazines, books, vinyl albums, and people to talk to right now in my life.
So I wrapped up all this music, all these memories and laid them out in a little mix here for you to listen to, to dance along with me. I hope it lights you up like a candle too.
I’m leaving town in a couple weeks – Going to Europe for 6 weeks and touring. It’s going to be a long, much needed break from this place, and a lot of very hard work. I can’t wait. But my plan is to continue and release there little compilations every single week with new art, a new essay, and every ten issues, release another hasty, self depricating mix of the my favorites from each of the previous nine shows. I trust that’s agreeable to you, and gives you something to look forward to. Enjoy.
Thank you for listening. See you next Sunday.
